For many companies, manually tracking Product Change Notices (PCN), or Product Discontinuation Notices (PDN), usually in PDF or email format, is a highly laborious and costly process. To reduce these efforts significantly, the Component Obsolescence Group Germany, which is part of the international IIOM network, developed an XML based universal machine-readable standard, known as smartPCN (see www.smartpcn.org).
The smartPCN format is already a standard in Germany (VDMA 24903 – also available in English) and it will be available as a global standard in 2024/2025 as Part 3 of IEC 62402:2019 (Obsolescence Management).
SmartPCN leads to a significant reduction of effort and time needed for PCN management. It is capable of completing all manual processing automatically, based on tools using smartPCN, allowing the user to focus on the important information and tasks. It enables a tool-based processing fully digital end-to-end.
